Orthodontist İn Beylikduzu

Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, prevention and correction of malpositioned teeth and jaw. A dentist who specializes in orthodontics is called an orthodontist.

How do Orthodontics Problems Arise and What is The Treatment?

Impairments in the jaw (e.g. misalignment of mandibular and maxilla) are usually genetic problems. If a patient has an orthodontic problem, a treatment method is chosen depending on the age of the patient. If the patient is adolescent and his/her mandibular is posterior or anterior of maxilla, an orthodontic treatment may be applicable. If the patient is an adult, severe skeletal impairments may be treated with collaboration of general surgery and orthodontics. Functional abnormalities (such as mouth breathing) may also cause orthodontic problems. If a patient is mouth breathing, maxilla usually narrows and consequently takes a V shape.

Long term patient habits (usually going back to childhood) such as using a pacifier or a feeding bottle, thumb sucking, nail biting etc. may also cause orthodontic problems. Habits like these should be treated as early as possible (Ages 7 to 10). Thus, a simple apparatus usage may be enough to prevent skeletal impairment. If habits are diagnosed at early ages, it may be possible to break these habits using an apparatus. Narrow maxilla can be treated using an orthodontics apparatus. Sometimes a person can inherit his/her jaw size from one parent while size of teeth from the other parent. If he/she has a bigger jaw and smaller teeth, then there may be gaps between teeth. If the tongue is too big or there are missing teeth in the patient’s mouth, these may also create gaps among teeth. When the jaw is small and teeth are big, then the teeth can not fit into the jaw and this is known as teeth crowding. Teeth crowding may be a result of early/late loss of deciduous teeth. For each deciduous tooth, there is a shedding time. For example if a deciduous tooth sheds at the age of 8 instead of 10 (i.e. earlier than the expected time) the remaining teeth move or drift into the empty space and as a result, the permanent tooth may fail to erupt from the same space. In this case, that new tooth may erupt toward inside/outside the dental arch and in some rare cases, that new tooth may not erupt at all.

Is Orthodontic Treatment Possible At Any Age?

There is no age limitation for orthodontic treatment. However, age still remains an important factor in determining the treatment method and period. Last couple of years have witnessed an increased prevalence of orthodontic treatment among adult populations. It is possible to minimize aesthetic concerns using especially porcelain braces. In some cases, orthodontic treatment is used to make better prostheses or to better prepare and align teeth for using prostheses. These kinds of treatments do not take long for completion and typically they are over within 4 to 12 months.

Is Orthodontic Treatment Painful?

The application session and the remaining control sessions are absolutely painless. However when braces are installed for the first time, some oral mucosal lesions may be observed. Most of the time, these lesions heal on their own within a week and do not relapse. In some rare cases (e.g. the braces brake or rupture etc.) these lesions may relapse. Dentist’s little intervention is usually enough to overcome such problems. In order to avoid such lesions, patients may be given wax for braces; the patient may apply this wax to the regions that cause pain in order to avoid irritation until next session with his/her dentist. Furthermore, patient may experience some pain in his/her teeth after the first session when the braces are installed, when he/she bites something hard or when he/she grinds. However, this pain diminishes automatically within 3 to 4 days.

Do Braces Cause Cavities in Teeth?

Braces definitely do not cause any cavities in teeth. In fact, the regions where these braces are attached are cavity-proof since bacteria can not go under these braces. However, corners/sides of these braces keep more bacteria than usual and this increases the risk of cavities, compared to a mouth without any braces. This risk may vanish with a proper oral care, by paying attention to oral hygiene and by doing detailed cleaning around the  braces.

Can You Brush Your Teeth When You are Wearing Braces?

Once the braces are installed, you can brush your teeth as usual. Brushing your teeth does not cause any risk for the braces such as breaking or dis-attachment. However, since better oral care is essential in this case, more careful and detailed brushing of your teeth is required. In that regard, specially designed orthodontic brushes or proxy brushes may be  used.

Things to Watch Out Once the Braces Are Installed

Eating hard or crunchy foods can cause the braces to break, so they should be avoided. Instead of biting some hard fruits such as pears or apples, they may be cut into small, bite-size pieces. Hard seeds of fruits (plums, olives etc.) should be removed prior to eating. Fizzy drinks should be avoided. Sticky and chewy foods, such as chewing gum, Turkish delight etc. should be avoided.

Period of Orthodontic Treatment

The period of orthodontic treatment depends on the patient’s age, severity of the problem and the method of treatment. However, the greatest factor is the compliance of the patient. As long as patient comes to sessions regularly, has a good oral care, does not break braces frequently and uses the apparatus properly, treatment period will be minimized. If the patient is compliant, with a good planning the treatment period should not take longer than 2.5 years, even in the most severe cases. Average treatment period is 1.5 years. It should also be noted that there are treatments that last less than 1 year.

Any Risk of Relapse Once The Orthodontic Treatment is Over?

The mobility of our teeth is life-long, they never stop moving. Especially chewing can cause teeth crowding in the elderly; even if they never had orthodontic treatment. Once the orthodontic treatment is over, it is not easy for the teeth to adapt to their new position and it may be difficult to have bone and ligament formation in the new positions. As a result, after the braces are removed, retainers and retention are necessary to avoid a risk of relapse. In that regard, in the inner part of the teeth some new braces may be attached or a removable retainer may be used.

Orthodontics Treatment Methods

There are several orthodontic treatment methods.

1. Braces
2. Moveable apparatus
3. Invisalign
4. Trainer
